RS-GIS Specialist
BASE: WWF-Philippines Main Office, with travels to selected WWF-Philippines sites
REPORTS TO: GIS Manager, Project Managers – GIS support projects
WORKS WITH:
Internal: GIS project staff, KKP support units, KKP project staff, consultants
External: External clients and consultants, Partner Institutions, Assisted Communities and groups, LGU of the different project sites, academe and research institutions, donors, and NGOs
SCOPE OF WORK
The Main responsibility of the Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System Specialist is to provide geospatial services and other related technical assistance to WWF-Philippines project sites around the country and/or region.
Specifically, the RS-GIS Specialist is expected to perform the following:
- Assist projects in identifying geospatial requirements, recommend GIS solutions, technical applications and required budgetary allocations
- Capture data in various formats using the Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, drone technology, digitizer or other means
- Maintain inventories and catalogues of the GIS files and attribute data
- Create, update and maintain the geodatabases of the assigned WWF-Philippines' projects using the agreed requirements and mapping standards
- Perform basic to advanced GIS manipulations, such as overlays and conversion of coverages, spatial analysis, thematic mapping, GPS collection/post-processing, and data reconciliation
- Perform Image Processing techniques, which include acquiring satellite images, image classification and analysis, data conversion, temporal change analysis, and feature extraction
- Build qualitative and quantitative attribute data about the properties, entities, and phenomena relevant to the assigned WWF-Philippines' projects
- Generate and update the GIS metadata, which allows estimations to be made on the completeness, history, ownership, and reliability of the data and information derived
- Design, produce, and print maps and other graphic products using the GIS and other computer software programs
- Build interactive web maps with ArcGIS online, ESRI’s web based mapping software
- Assist in sourcing and acquiring spatial data and models to describe phenomena and trends in land cover/land use, oceanography, ecological processes, biodiversity, and socio-economic data related to the projects
- Update, synchronize and maintain the GIS files in the GIS data server
- Submit monthly progress reports and closely coordinate GIS activities of the project to the managers, project staff, consultant, and partners
- Assist project staff, consultants, and partners in data management (data input, organization and integration with other components)
- Assist in the planning and conduct of training courses on GIS/GPS applications, if needed
- Assist in the preparation of presentation materials, reports, and special events with GIS components
- Ensure the proper handling, maintenance, use and storage of GIS/GPS equipment in the HQ or field offices
- Establish and maintain professional cooperation, linkage and partnership with government and other institutions whose intentions and programs of work are related with the above

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geodetic Engineering, natural resources, Forestry, Environmental Science, Ecology or any related discipline AND at least two (2) years of professional GIS experience in mapping, analysis, and data management.
- Applicants must have a general technical knowledge of GIS and various methods for processing, manipulating and analyzing spatial data -- in particular using ESRI ArcGIS products
- Knowledge and/or experience in using drone technology and Satellite Image processing software, EXELIS ENVI/ERDAS, is preferred.
- Knowledge in using open-sourced GIS systems such as Quantum GIS, including database management systems, GIS programming, and online mapping systems is strongly desired.
- Experience in developing training modules and conducting GIS/GPS training is an advantage.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Willing to travel as needed, conduct field works, spend long time outdoors with coastal and inland communities, partners, consultants, field workers, etc.
