Lead Trainer

Title of Project: Project COPE (Circular Operations for a Plastic pollution-free Environment) 

Base: Manila (Hybrid with occasional travel to project sites: Quezon City, Caloocan City, Cagayan de Oro, Siargao)

WWF’s No Plastic in Nature (NPIN) Initiative was founded in 2018, and its goal is to stop leakage of plastic by 2030. Our goal is to stop the flow of plastic entering nature by 2030 through: elimination of unnecessary plastic; doubling reuse, recycling and recovery; and ensuring the remaining plastic is sourced responsibly. 

To further this initiative, WWF-Philippines shall implement Project COPE (Circular Operations for a Plastic pollution-free Environment) with the goal of helping address the urgent issue of plastic waste pollution by reducing plastic waste leakage into the environment through increased recovery, recycling and reuse. The project pioneers a replicable system that integrates Local Government Units (LGUs) and waste workers, emphasizing social inclusion to foster the development of sustainable and circular solid waste management (SWM) systems across project sites nationwide. With a focus on improving and strengthening SWM systems in targeted locations, the project aims to enhance circularity, establish cooperative models among waste workers, and implement replicable models that strengthen engagement between LGUs and informal waste workers, while enhancing their SWM systems. 

 

WORKS WITH

Internal: Within WWF Philippines, this post reports to the Project Manager and interacts with the Project Coordinators across the project sites, Senior Management and Corporate Partnerships Unit

External: Donor partner, consultants, government officials particularly in the B/LGUs and the DENR, community partners and leaders, stakeholders, private sectors, government agencies and non-government organizations 

 

SCOPE OF WORK 

The Lead Trainer will be mainly responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring all the project's training and capacity-building activities. The position holder will lead the conduct of training needs assessments as necessary and coordinate all training conducted by the project across the partner communities and stakeholders. S/he will assist the project team in developing modalities for providing distance support and capacity building to identified partners (informal waste workers, junk shop owners). The training will be designed to help the partner groups of informal waste workers address their needs and gaps in proper solid waste management, business management, organizational development and personal empowerment skills. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Design comprehensive training programs for partner communities covering solid waste management, business management, organizational development, and personal empowerment. 
  2. Conduct training needs analysis of the identified groups of stakeholders from the partner sites’ solid waste management value chain to be supported by the project.
  3. Create training modules, materials, and resources, including manuals and multimedia visual aids that may be used for both online and in-person sessions.
  4. Conduct training sessions, workshops and seminars utilizing various methodologies to cater to the different skills and backgrounds of the target participants, ensuring effective delivery of modules.
  5. Conduct a post-training evaluation to gauge the effectiveness of the training in achieving the program objectives through surveys, FGDs and other feedback mechanisms in collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Officer.
  6. Continuously enhance training modules, resources and methodologies based on feedback from evaluation results. 
  7. Identify and tap a network of expert trainers/speakers/resource people in relevant fields as applicable.
  8. Provide support to the project manager in overseeing and co-designing the Project COPE Mentorship Program on SWM practices and social entrepreneurship for informal waste workers.
  9. Facilitate the selection and orientation of mentors, including the matching process with mentees, while ensuring smooth conduct of the Mentee Readiness Test.
  10. Keep abreast of industry trends, practices and innovations in solid waste management, circular economy and social entrepreneurship that may be used to provide insights and practical examples during training sessions.
  11. Ensure compliance of training processes and procedures with WWF’s Environmental Social Safeguards Framework.
  12. Ensure the maintenance of accurate documentation and records of training activities and participants’ progress and outcomes achieved. 
  13. Collaborate with the internal teams, external experts and stakeholders to incorporate diverse perspectives and knowledge into training programs and modules. 
  14. Establish a supportive learning community by fostering relationships built on continuous support, mutual respect and shared learning experiences with the training participants. 
  15. Efficiently manage budgets related to training and capacity development activities.
  16. Prepare project reports and presentations to highlight the impacts of training initiatives.

COMPETENCY 

  1. Qualifications: University or advanced degree in business, environmental and social science, development studies, development communications or a related field. 
  2. Experience: Minimum of three years experience as a lead trainer, facilitator or mentor to local/ grassroots community, preferably for business development on solid waste management (SWM) value chain/ 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) and environmental projects; Experience in working with grass-root communities in urban and rural areas 
  3. Skills and Abilities: 
    1. Solid experience and skills in managing training sessions and identifying appropriate training needs and methods 
    2. Strong analytical, training and management skills, with proficiency in relevant software tools 
    3. Experience in module development and contextualization, especially in the areas of solid waste management, business development, social entrepreneurship and personal empowerment
    4. Mastery of MS Office, especially Excel, including Google platform. Experience in online survey tools
    5. Excellent report-writing skills
    6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
    7. Strong people management and facilitation skills
    8. Positive attitude and an organized approach to work
    9. Good decision-making skills and requires no or very minimal supervision
    10. Willing and able to travel to various project sites
    11. Ability to speak the local language in place of assignment is a plus

DURATION OF THE ENGAGEMENT 

This contract will be conducted over a period of 24 months and accounts for 100% of the Lead Trainer’s time with WWF-Philippines.
