Carbon Footprint Calculator (CFC) Values Researcher
Project: WWF-Philippines’ Carbon Footprint Calculator (for individuals)
Duration: 2 months
Reports to: Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development Manager; Angela Ibay, Climate Change & Energy Programme Head
Applicant must identify and align with the core values of the WWF organization: Courage, Integrity, Respect & Collaboration
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
The World Wide Fund for Nature or WWF is the world’s largest and most experienced conservation organization, operating in over 100 countries through the support of nearly five million people worldwide. WWF-Philippines has been working as a national organization of the WWF network since 1996 and develops practical solutions to help the country adapt to climate change, secure food and water resources, conserve endangered species, manage marine and coastal ecosystems, empower communities to live low-impact lives, promote energy efficiency and catalyze the shift to renewable sources of clean energy.
The Philippines emits an average of 1.98 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per capita in 2020. This is way below the average global average of 4 MTs per capita. In 2016, the CO2 emissions per capita in the Philippines are equivalent to 1.22 MTs per person, showing an increase in 2020.
One of the ways to understand the impact of one’s activities and lifestyle is by using a carbon calculator, which calculates an individual’s carbon footprint. The activities of an individual produce their own amount of carbon dioxide which is totaled to reflect one’s carbon footprint in terms of total amount of greenhouse gases generated by these actions and activities. Information about how we live our lives, particularly information of the use of electricity, the generation of wastes, and the means of transport are used. By plugging in information into the calculator, one’s carbon footprint can be generated. The information needed can also be expanded should the scope and target audience of the carbon calculator be beyond an individual. Sample recommendations on how to lessen one’s carbon footprint can be generated based on the results of the carbon footprint calculator.
EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
- Carbon footprint calculator tailored to Philippine context and interfaced into an online platform
- Database for use of the calculator including updated emission factors
DELIVERABLES
- Populate and develop database for use on the calculator. The data to be gathered may include, but is not limited to the following:
- Emissions factor for energy (electricity, power), transport (air transport, public transport, vehicle type), forestry, waste (solid domestic waste), food
- Carbon footprint in your lifestyle à lighting, airconditioning, water use, appliances used, etc.
- Consumption à regular purchase/consumption of disposable/plastic packaging, regular purchase of takeout/pre-packaged meals, waste produced (recyclables, biodegradable, etc.), food waste generated
- Transportation à kind of transport use, frequency of travel, distance and speed of travel, type of fuel used
- Coordination with the CFC Developer for the integration of the database in the platform
- Report on the development of the CFC
KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER IN DEVELOPING THE CALCULATOR
- Data to be used should, as much as possible, be the latest and Philippine specific. Approximate figures such as those on emission factors provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) can be used if no Philippine data is available, provided it is the latest.
- The unit of measure for the calculator will be in Metric Tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e)
