Environmental education continues in the face of the Philippines’ nationwide lockdown as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines launches Panda Talks.

Panda Talks is a series of free live educational webisodes hosted via Facebook Live. The webisodes focus on key environmental issues, with the goal of teaching audiences what they can do to help address each one. The first sub-series, Conservation Starts at Home, highlighted the importance of food and water security, and taught viewers ways on how they can help ensure both for their families and communities.

By equipping the general Philippine public with knowledge on these key issues, WWF-Philippines hopes to develop a renewed sense of responsibility for the environment and to nurture more environmental advocates who can help #ChangeTheEnding for our planet, sharing in the organization’s message of conservation.

The webisodes were conceptualized in response to the lockdown currently gripping the Philippines. Face-to-face activities are put on hold as much of the country remains under Extended Community Quarantine (ECQ), with the rest remaining under general lockdown. Many businesses and organizations like WWF-Philippines have had to move to digital channels in order to continue with their work.

“It’s important that we continue educating the public on environmental issues during these times. Everyone has a role to play in taking care of our planet. By reaching out to the public through our Panda Talks series, we want to equip everyone – governments, businesses, private individuals – with the knowledge and practices to begin caring for our planet, from their own homes,” said WWF-Philippines Executive Director Jose Angelito Palma.

WWF-Philippines held its first Panda Talks on the 22nd of April, as part of the organization’s Earth Day 2020 celebrations. The first talk, entitled “Basics of Urban Container Gardening,” taught audiences how to grow their own food at home. The second, entitled “Conserving Water, Conserving Forests,” focused on mindfulness over water usage, as well as the role played by forests and watersheds in protecting this vital resource.

Key to WWF’s conservation advocacy is environmental education. The organization works actively with governments, businesses, and the general public as it promotes environmental practices and principles that can be adopted by all.

“We must work together to save lives, ease suffering, and lessen the negative economic and social consequences… The current crisis is an unprecedented wake-up call. We need to turn the recovery into a real opportunity to do things right for the future,” said United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in a message given in honor of Earth Day 2020.

WWF-Philippines will continue hosting more webisodes in its Panda Talks series over the coming months. The next talk, which will be held on the 14th of May, will focus on sustainable finance and the importance of the banking sector in building a healthy environment. Details will be shared through the organization’s social media pages.
